Where to Go on Your First Visit in Seoul

With over twenty districts (Gu), Seoul has plenty of places to explore. And choosing which ones you can add to your itinerary can be a real challenge. But if you only have to pick a few, here are some of the best areas to visit to start your adventures in Seoul and why you need to go.


Why go: In Jongno-gu, you get a mix of the busy urban and laid-back old town feel. This district is home to towering skyscrapers and ancient Royal Palaces that are among Seoul’s most famous attractions. Most of the city’s must-see sights are within a short walk from each other. Jongno-gu is a great spot to explore if you want to tick-off some of the city’s iconic landmarks on your list.

What to see: Gwanghwamun Gate, Gyeongbukgung Palace and the Royal Guard Changing Ceremony, Gwanghwamun Square, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Changdeokgung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insa-dong, National Folk Museum of Korea, Unhyeongung Royal Residence, Gwangjang Market, and more.


Why go: Like Jongno-gu, Jung-gu is brimming with popular landmarks and tourist spots. From shopping streets to historic sites, this district is a treasure trove of fascinating finds.

What to see: Namdaemun Market, Myeong-dong, Myeong-dong Cathedral, Namsan Cable Car boarding station to N Seoul Tower, Namsan, Deoksugung or Deoksugung Palace, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Dongdaemun Market, Namsangol Hanok Village, Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul Cartoon Museum, and Gwanghuimun among others.


Why go: Yongsan-gu sits between two of the city’s renowned districts – Gangnam and Jongno-gu as well as Jung-gu. Its close proximity to the other two districts on the list makes it an excellent addition to the list. It is home to what is known as the international neighborhood of Itaewon and other points of interest.

What to see: The Itaewon nightlife, shopping streets, War Memorial and Museum, and Yongsan Electronics Market.
